ABOUT US

We began training dogs together in 1979, originally specializing in training Labrador Retrievers as gundogs. Our first stockdog was purchased in the mid-80's, and gradually the switch was made to training herding dogs. Kent got into competitive herding trials in 1989.

Our focus here at the XP Ranch is on training dogs for ranch or trial work, and teaching students across the US to train and handle their own dogs. We also trial on cattle and sheep, and occasionally judge competitive trials. We have qualified for, and competed at the National Cattledog Association National Finals since 2014. Kent has won Open  and Open Ranch Championships at the Houston and San Antonio Stock Shows. He has also won Grand Champion, as well as several Reserve Grands at the Denver National Western Stock Show.

Kent is well known for his ability to read and understand dogs and handlers as well as livestock, and is a great communicator as well as educator. We travel approximately 60,000 miles per year competing, judging, instinct testing and instructing at clinics throughout the U.S.

What Does XP Mean?

The name for our ranch
comes from our livestock brand,
which is a second generation tradition
in the Herbel family. It originated back in the 70's
when Kent's dad Norman, along with his brother Clayton
wanted to come up with a brand that
would honor and glorify our
Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

"For every beast in the forest is mine,
and the cattle upon a thousand hills."
~~Psalms 50:10~~

The XP is the Chi-Rho (pronounced ki-row) symbol,
which is generally depicted as the Greek letter chi
(which looks like the Roman alphabet X)
superimposed over the elongated stem of the Greek letter rho (which looks like the Roman alphabet P).

The Chi and Rho are the first two letters
in the Greek word for Christ, XPICTOC
(pronounced Christos).

"I can do all things through Christ
who strengthens me."
~~Phillippians 4:13~~
